Shopify or WooCommerce: a 60-second decision

A practical decision framework based on your team, budget, and goals.

Both Shopify and WooCommerce can run an excellent store, so the question isn't which is "better" - it's which fits you. This is the quick framework we use with clients to reach a confident answer in about a minute.

The one-line answer

Choose Shopify if you want the simplest path to selling with the least maintenance. Choose WooCommerce if you want maximum control and to own your platform outright - and you have the technical comfort (or a developer) to look after it.

A 60-second decision framework

  • Want to focus on selling, not servers? Shopify.
  • Need deep customisation or unusual workflows? WooCommerce.
  • Prefer predictable monthly costs with hosting included? Shopify.
  • Already run WordPress or lean heavily on content/blogging? WooCommerce.
  • Want to be selling within a day, with no technical fuss? Shopify.
  • Want full ownership and freedom to change anything? WooCommerce.

Questions to ask yourself

  • How technical is the person who'll maintain this day to day?
  • How standard is my store - or do I need something unusual?
  • Is predictable cost or maximum control more important to me?
  • Is content marketing central to how I'll attract customers?
Still unsure?

If your store is fairly standard and you'd rather not think about hosting, Shopify is usually the right first move. If control and ownership matter more, WooCommerce rewards the extra effort. And remember: you can migrate later - it's routine work, not a one-way door. If you'd like a straight recommendation for your specific store, including a realistic cost comparison, we're happy to help you decide.
